Portland. The phone rang twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A woman answered. Native English speaker, polite, clearly awake. She started taking our information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We stopped her mid-sentence: &#8220;This is a research test. You passed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>She was the only one out of 50 who picked up.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probably an answering service. Someone who could take a message. Not qualify a lead. Not book a consultation. Not tell us if the firm even handled car accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One firm picked up. Zero did real intake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That call was part of a larger study. We wanted to know: how fast do PI law firms actually respond to leads after hours? Not what they claim. What happens when you call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">153 firms. Three tests. Paying $50 to $200 per click.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We posed as a car accident victim with neck and back pain. Standard intake scenario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An AI voice agent tracked all callbacks with exact timestamps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three tests. Three ways leads try to reach law firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"test-1\">Test 1: Law Firm After Hours Phone Calls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We called 50 law firms after business hours. Speaker on, timer running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is what we heard:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Our business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 5.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Please leave a message and we will return your call.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Our office is currently closed.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;If you are a potential client, press 1.&#8221;<\/em> Press 1. More options. Then voicemail anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One firm had a voicemail that said &#8220;Your call is important to us&#8221; then hung up after 4 rings. No beep. No way to leave a message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>Result<\/th><th>Count<\/th><th>%<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Voicemail<\/td><td>47<\/td><td>94%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Answered<\/td><td>3<\/td><td>6%<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the 3 that picked up: 2 were answering services that took messages. 1 had actual staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>94% of firms send after-hours callers straight to voicemail.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of these firms advertise &#8220;24\/7&#8221; on their websites. Our calls say otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answering services sound professional. But they do not qualify leads. They do not book appointments. They are a voicemail with a human voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One firm had an AI receptionist that picked up in 2 seconds. Actual conversation. Actual intake. Name, phone, &#8220;I was in a car accident last week.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then we waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>Result<\/th><th>Count<\/th><th>%<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>No response in 12 hours<\/td><td>47<\/td><td>92.2%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Response in 12 hours<\/td><td>4<\/td><td>7.8%<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Submit a form at 8 PM. Wake up. Check your phone. Nothing. Check at lunch. Maybe something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By then, the lead has already called two other firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"test-3\">Test 3: Contact Forms During Business Hours<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We submitted forms to 52 firms between 9 AM and 5 PM. Peak hours. Staff at desks. Pay $50 to $200 per click. Then let the lead sit in an inbox while staff handle other calls, take lunch, sit in meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The form says &#8220;We will contact you shortly.&#8221; Shortly means different things to different people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-numbers\">The Numbers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>153 firms tested<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>131 failed<\/strong> at law firm after hours response (85.6%)<\/li><li><strong>22 passed<\/strong> (14.4%)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">85.6% of law firms lose leads before the first real conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-money\">The Money<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conservative math. It will hurt more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-this-happens\">Why Law Firm After Hours Response Fails<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not laziness. Coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staff leave at 5 or 6, and law firm after hours coverage is almost nonexistent. Answering services take messages but cannot do intake. Voicemail feels professional until you realize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbesbusinesscouncil\/2022\/07\/26\/why-missed-calls-are-missed-revenue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">80% of callers will not leave one<\/a>.
